This is a mural I did some time ago, called “Birds at Mowich Lake”. The birds are all from a list the clients had seen on their property. They do not have this view of Mount Rainier, but they wanted it for their bathroom. To see this and more custom bathroom tile murals, go to https://www.paullewingtile.com/bathrooms.
This one went out last week. It will go around a window in a new condo up at Snoqualmie Summit ski area. It features the mountain itself, the chair list there, a yeti (NOT a Susquatch) hiding in the trees, and the Running of the Rainiers, which all long-time Northwesterners will remember.
Lately I’ve been painting, getting ready for the Bellevue Arts Museum Fair at the end of July. Here’s my latest, a pika at Mt. Rainier, 11” x 14”.
This piece just got installed this week. It's a scene of ReflectionLake at Mt. Rainier. This was an unusual piece for me these days, in that it was cone 5 glazes, not china paint. It was done for a client who had me do 5 cone 5 landscape pieces for her many years ago, who has now moved. It’s on 4 1/4” tiles and there are probably 25 or so different glazes used here. Each color is a different glaze.
The Northwest trifecta! And Mount Baker to boot! This little piece will be installed in a table top. It’s a combination of two images from my catalogue, resized to fit the space.
This one is going into a niche in a wall. Back in 1994, I did 5 tile murals for this couple and they’ve just sold that house and moved into a condo. Unlike almost every mural I’m doing these days, this one is not china paint. It’s cone 4 oxidation glazes (not underglazes). Every color is a different glaze, and I invented the recipes for a lot of them. I counted 28 of them on this piece. The color in the photo is a little off toward yellow from what it really looks like.
This seems to be the most popular image on the Shop page. I think this is the third time so far this year I’ve painted this image for someone. It’s a little different this time. I changed the ferry boat to a slightly newer, but still vintage, boat. I think this is going to be the standard image form now on.
Not all the jobs I do are big and impressive. Here’s one that’s about as small as it gets. But nice.
This picture just came in. It’s a small backsplash I did back in 2019, showing Mt. Rainier. It’s an unusual one for me, as this is cone 4 oxidation glazes, not china paint. I used to do a lot of this, but hardly any these days. The best part about getting this picture is that the owners at the same time commissioned another mural for their bathroom.
This tile panel just went home today. It’s 3’ x 4’, on 12” x 12” porcelain tiles. It’s going to be installed, framed, on an exterior wall of a new house. The clients had originally wanted a kitchen backsplash, but plans changed. They sent me a photo of Mt. Rainier with wildflowers as a possible subject for this mural. I suggested we use an acrylic painting of mine called “New Day in Paradise” because it was more dramatic than their picture. That painting was used on photos I took at dawn on my 70th birthday, above Paradise Lodge on Mt. Rainier. They then suggested the addition of the Bible verse. This is china paint on commercial tile.
